Several members seem to view the post2host posting requirement as a pointless whim of the forum owner. They also appear to think that it will waste forum space if they make posts of a less-than-brilliant quality.
It doesn't matter if a post is not top quality, so long as people put it in "Off-topic", and do not clog up the technical subfora (fora is the plural of forum!)
Why do posts matter?
1. If a member is paid4, then it is no skin off the owner's nose if the member just abandons his website. On free hosting, many people try it out, and install lots of scripts as a test. They then give it up, as they are entitled to do, and the host owner is quite philosophical about it. The problem is that they do not tell HostCell to close the account, and lots of disk space is left clogged up. So...
if members post on the forum, it proves they are still active members.
2. This is something HostCell's owner cannot say out loud on the forum. I can say it, because I am just a member (and I am really just guessing, even though I know I am right!) Making you come to the forum increases the chances you will click on the advertisements shown here. The site owner makes a little money every time people click on the ads. However, it is part of the advertisers' TOS that the site owner must not encourage people to click on his ads. He cannot even hint that he would like you to click on the ads! (But I may, because I am a disinterested 3rd party.) So...
if members post on the forum, they see the ads shown here.
Hopefully, this helps explain why forum posting is not a pointless and degrading chore!

Yes thats is very true. Also to mention
A quality forum is also a great resource for online harvesters. Paid customers dont tend to leave a service with out notification. Free does. Now if you are a free user and dont show up in the forum and your site didn't receive any hits for months, what should we make out from it? Being active on the forum is also an way to disable inactivity requirement.

IMO it is pointless. I found this site doing a Google search on 'free web hosting' or something, and the first site that came up that lists them all listed many great ones that do not require anything but the site being legal and to some degree decent.
I only update my public homepage a couple/few times a year and am too busy to post for no reason. I have other places I can put my site and will probably be moving it soon or trying one of the other hosts on that list.

It's not really a pointless chore, I don't have a brilliant social life so it makes my life easier to be able to talk to other technical-minded web people like yourselves :)

I think forum posting is enjoyable and fun. It sucks when there's not a lot of people to talk to. And it can be rewarding as well, like getting quality free hosting perhaps.

"posting a pointless chore?" nothing could be further from the truth.
It's a great way to meet new people, hear and talk about new ideas, and best of all, learn things you never knew you didn't know..

I believe that may be why the school of computer science at my uni uses moodle forums...gets everyone talking and learning better.
