Why are almost all forum topics locked ?
Is this becasue of the recent restore of Hostcell data ? ( Good job, BTW, dear admins. At least we now know: you guys do have a backup :-D )
Or is it because you don't want too many comments on a thread or you don't want it to be used for too long ? Do you lock it after some time of in_activity ? Is is because you want more new threads coming up ?
I wonder whether this is a good philosophy. Again and again I find threads where I would like to add something but it is locked. Forcing people to open up new threads yields the risk to ctreate duplicates.
So, what is the reason behind all these locked forum threads ?
Regards .... Axel

Threads do get autolocked after 15 days (I think).
How ever, As Northern said, threads can be re-opened upon contact.

Well one, that chip butty muncher!
Might it also be that spam-bots are engineered to attack the most popular forum software, like vB, phpBB, SMF, and MyBB, rather than the more esoteric IP.Board?

Unfortunately for guys like me having all these "locks" makes posting very diffficult. The gruesome end result is that my site could be wiped off the face of the earth as I was unable to make the required number of monthly postings!

Thanks for replies chaps. I can only get online occasionally, so just hope that my site doesn't get zapped before then. Got to go now, other duties call!

Lots of fairly new members find it much easier to add to an existing thread, rather than create their own.

I agree with Sours. It's not easy to start an interesting topic. I think the threads should be open a little longer.

Well they are open for almost 3 weeks without reply for discussions sake, but you can always request to open a thread instead digging one no one cares.

Me, too.
It seems to me that discussion is discussion, and whether the topic is new or old, someone might have a valuable point to add. I would prefer a thread-lock threshold of 6 weeks, or even a year. Or none. Threads with a natural time sensitivity such as "Who do you think will win the Super Bowl?" will die a natural death on their own.

Well, nobody has been locking threads so fiercely after the recent Strike, so perhaps this matter of contention is being tactfully forgotten.

We are facing a severe shortage of new threads. It is 3 days since anybody started a new thread!
